A solemn tribute to the life and legacy of Anna Christopher who left an indelible mark on her community and those who knew her.
As we mourn Anna's passing, we also celebrate the enduring impact she has had on those she leaves behind. Among immediate surviving family members are her son Paul, her daughter Joanna and predeceased by her son Stephen. She also leaves her two beloved Grandchildren, Michael and Pamela plus her youngest sibling, Alice Evans Kapavik. She is predeceased by her four other siblings, Ruth Cox, James Rogies, Lydia Bartel, and Renee Oakley.
Anna, born May 20 1931, passed on April 16, 2024 at the age of 92. She was born in Hempstead, NY to Augustus and Johanna Rogies. Her family resided in Farmingdale where she was a graduate of Farmingdale High School, class of 1949.
After graduation she attended business school and upon completion Anna met her future husband, Michael Christopher who had along with his family immigrated from Athens, Greece. .
They married in 1951, just four months after meeting each other. That same year she and her husband purchased the Terrace Dinner in West Babylon, NY and along with their business partner successfully ran the business for 30 years. Upon the death of her beloved husband, Anna went on to open, The Windmill Diner, in Shirley NY, There, she committed another 30 years to the restaurant business and retired at the age of 75.
During her early years of marriage, she along with her husband worked with a few other families toward establishing a Greek Orthodox Community in Babylon Township. The beginning was a modest storefront in West Babylon and soon relocated to John Street in the town of Babylon where the community grew and thrived. In 1959 the church community was established and Anna gave birth to her third child, Stephen, who was the first child to be Baptized in the St. Nicholas of Babylon Community. Anna volunteered much of her time to insure the growth and success of the church by assisting in numerous events and holiday preparations. She was a member of the Mr. and Mrs. club and was President of the Babylon chapter of the Ladies Philoptochos Society in 1962.
Anna had many personal interests and hobbies such as reading, was a great lover of music, and cooking of course happily hosting holiday family gatherings. Additionally, she was an avid collector and among her many collections was the Department 56 Christmas Village which she devoted many days to setting up the village display and was dedicated including the most minute details within her display.
In remembrance of Anna Christopher let us honor not only her significant professional achievements but also the loving relationships she cultivated throughout her richly lived life.
May her spirit of dedication, love and faith inspire us all to emulate the extraordinary qualities that defined her legacy. May her memory be eternal.
