Born in Brooklyn in 1925 and raised in the waters surrounding his beloved Broad Channel, in the spring of 1942 Dan’s mother signed a waiver allowing him to leave high school before graduation to enlist in the Navy at 17. From 1942 to 1946 he served as a 2nd Class Salvage Diver where he dove on the USS Arizona in Pearl Harbor and as a 1st Class Gunner’s Mate on an LCI in the Pacific. After leaving the Navy, he served in the Army Reserves until 1966; retiring as a Major.
Dan worked for over 30 years in the Signals and Communications Department of the Long Island Railroad; retiring in 1978.
Over the last 40 years, he worked with Firematic Supply Company in Yaphank, and Ben’s Hardware/Paint Station in Middle Island, while being an active member of the Yaphank Senior Citizen Club and Commander of the Captain William H. Neuss Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #6194.
He is survived by his children, Ann Tabacco (Michael), Cathy Hogan (Mike), and Dan Jr. (Bianca); his grandsons, Gary Farrell and Joey Riela; and longtime companion Lottie Carrabus.
