On Tuesday, April 16, 2019, Denis Driscoll, loving husband, father and Pop Pop, passed away at the age of 80 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Denis was born in Dunmanus, Co. Cork, Ireland, and was the youngest of seven children. He immigrated to the United States in 1964 where he met his wife Julia Murphy. Julia and Denis were married in 1968 in Ireland, by Fr. Michael Driscoll, Denis’s brother and a newly ordained priest. They raised four children, Michael, Ann, Brendan and Mary and adored their seven grandchildren (with one on the way), Ryan, Hannah, Emily, Kaitlin, Erin, Molly and Aidan.
Denis lived a life focused on family and faith. He was a devout Catholic with unwavering dedication and belief. He was a devoted husband and father who put caring for his family above all else. He loved being Pop Pop and participating in the lives of his grandkids, including watching them play, cheering soccer games or just listening to them read a story. He was proud of his career as a carpenter, building the major landmarks in New York City, such as the World Trade Center and Rockefeller Center, and seventeen years with Queens College. In the early 2000’s, Julia and Denis built their dream house on the water and Denis’s skilled and caring touch is evident throughout their home. He loved to fish and being out on his boat in Peconic Bay (or any boat in any bay). He loved his visits to Ireland where he would spend time with his sister, Mary, and his nephews and nieces and meeting old friends everywhere he went. Denis loved to sit and chat and enjoyed investing himself in the lives and stories of others. Everyone loved to see “Uncle Denis” coming to visit because it meant happy times would soon follow.
He is survived by his wife Julia and the families of his four children: Michael and Alyse Driscoll and their children, Ryan and Hannah; Ann and Keith Cook and their children, Emily and Kaitlin; Brendan and Martha Driscoll and their children, Molly and Aidan; and Mary and Brian Reilly and their daughter Erin. He is also survived by his sister Mary O’Sullivan, his brother Fr. Michael Driscoll, and his many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider supporting Good Shepherd Hospice, which is the agency that helped Julia and Denis through the last months of his illness. https://goodshepherdhospice.chsli.org/donations.
