While one can give a general summary about Dennis, this would barely capture his true essence. He was born on September 5, 1925 in Harlem, New York to the late Dennis P. Walker, Sr. and Birdie Walker. Upon his mother’s passing early in his childhood, the family relocated to Norfolk, Virginia; he and his late sister (Virginia Kirkland) were raised by their late father and stepmother, Emily Walker. He was educated in the Norfolk Virginia Public Schools. Their home had a large backyard garden where he developed his love of gardening. He continued his agrarian relationship long after leaving the south, as one could always find some manner of vegetable growing in his beloved backyard garden in Wyandanch, New York. He grew the biggest squash and the sweetest tomatoes! One would be remiss not to mention his fondness of professional wrestling; he always reminisced about one of their earliest dates, when he surprised his wife, Aggie, as he affectionately called her, to a ‘live’ match. He continued to enjoy wrestling and faithfully watched the WWE every Friday night.
Dennis fell in love and was united in holy matrimony to Agnes Mullen on December 21, 1946 and moved shortly thereafter to New York. Their union was blessed with both longevity and fruitfulness as they remained married for over sixty-seven years and produced five children: Bernadette Agnes (deceased), Dennis Phillip III, Nelson Christopher, Andrew Martin and Patricia Ann. He was also blessed with eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. His beliefs and convictions always stayed firmly moored to the teachings of Jesus Christ and upon relocating to NY, he immediately united with ‘St. Rita’s Parish’ in Long Island City, where he served as an usher.
Upon relocating to Wyandanch in 1993, he found another community that welcomed his passion of the Lord and united with ‘Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal’ and joined the choir. He loved singing and one could clearly hear Dennis singing in the choir on Sundays with his deep rich voice. He was a true entertainer. Dennis was a faithful servant all his life!
His passion was his “family”. He was the Patriarch of the family, who worked assiduously to provide a home and a good family environment. Dennis and Agnes sacrificed so that their children could succeed. He understood the importance of education and steadfastly encouraged the educational pursuits and aspirations of all their children. He was employed by CBS Studio- Local #54 for over thirty years in order to provide a religious and private education for their five children. Even after toiling long hours, he found time for recreation. We fondly remember our trips to the Museum of Natural History, Coney Island, Virginia Beach, and we never missed the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Our house was always open to family and friends.
On January 1, 2014, the sun set on the life of this truly remarkable man, as the Father decided that he needed another angel with him in heaven. Although the mortal heart has ceased to beat, the spiritual heart has been filled with joy and peace. After a few months of illness, pain and physical strife – all endured with a sense of calm, serenity and stoicism that can only come from one who truly knows Jesus as their Lord and Savior – HE SURRENDERED HIS SPIRIT TO GOD.
He has departed from us and has joined those in the eternal resting home built not with mortal hands, but in a mansion built by a maker whose hands are pure omnipotent spirit. His heart is now filled with joy as he rests where pain and the infirmities of the human body can reach him no more, as he basks in the glory of the Lord. He has been reunited with his Heavenly Father, as well as his earthly daughter, Bernadette and other cherished relatives and friends.
Dennis leaves to cherish the fond memories of his wonderful life: his devoted wife of 67 years, Agnes; 4 children, Dennis P. (Novella) Walker III, Nelson C. (Gloria) Walker, Andrew M. (Elaine) Walker all of New York and Patricia (John) Swan of Florida; 8 grandchildren, Nefesa, Vanessa, Lakeisha, Andrew Jr., Alana, Matthew, Natasha, and Jason; 8 great-grandchildren, cousin Cora Lee Rice, numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, and a veritable sea of relatives, friends, admirers and well wishers all of whom count themselves as being fortunate to have known Dennis P. Walker, Jr.
