Dorothy H. Zelechowski

June 10, 1933 — June 29, 2020

Dorothy Marie Higgins Zelechowski, also lovingly referred to as Grandot by many, transitioned from this life on June 29, 2020, in her home in North Babylon after a long fight with Covid-19 and it’s complications. Dorothy was born June 10, 1933, in Brooklyn to James and Alice Higgins. She was an avid reader and had the mind and intellect of a scholar. She wrote short stories for the entertainment of her close friends and family, some of which were published in The Hendersonville Times and Readers Digest. Dorothy worked hard throughout her life and proudly became the executive secretary to the President of Purolator Courier. She has been described by others as poised, eccentric, kind, giving, compassionate, feisty, thoughtful, spontaneous, generous and loving. After retirement, Dorothy spent her time volunteering to help others in need by delivering Meals on Wheels and reading the newspaper aloud on the radio for the blind. She was active in multiple parishes across the years and was a lector at Our Lady of the Snows in Floral Park, NY, Immaculate Conception in Hendersonville, NC and Cyril and Methodius in North Babylon, NY. Dorothy was preceded in death by her spouse John and 4 of her sisters. She is survived by her sister Alice, son Chris and her two daughters, Jean and Susan along with their spouses, 7 grandchildren, 1 granddaughter-in-law, 1 great-grandson and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her human family, Dorothy was also an animal lover, caring for many cats over the years including her current baby, Daisy, who will continue to be loved and cared for by her family. To the world, her everlasting words are, “God Bless”. Please send any memorials to United Cerebral Palsy or the Special Olympics. Due to the current pandemic, we have chosen to commemorate Dorothy’s life on the one year anniversary of her passing with a funeral mass and interment. Detail to follow.
