Emmy Johnson Case of Riverhead died April 18, 2018. She was 99 years old.
Born in Arendal, Norway on Aug. 7, 1918, she was the daughter of Olaf and Selma Terkelsen Johnson.
She moved to Riverhead from Norway with her parents at age seven.
A 1938 graduate of Riverhead High School, she worked for the Department of Agriculture.
She married Andrew Lloyd Case in 1941.
She was appointed a Special Deputy Sheriff by Sherriff Charles R. Dominy and Sheriff Frank Gross, to work with her Deputy Sheriff husband on special cases involving females. She also acted as a guard for female jurors during a trial. Sheriff Dominy gave her the gold strip ribbon and told her to purchase a black skirt and to sew it down each side seam and to attach to sheriff’s patch to her white blouses, which she did.
She was a secretary at Riverhead Methodist Church for 25 years and was the church’s oldest member. She was a former member of Rebekah Lodge, in Riverhead.
Predeceased by her husband, her sister Ruth Stone, and brothers John S. Johnson and Robert M. Johnson, she is survived by her daughter Georgette Lane Case and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will take place on Friday, April 20 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Tuthill-Mangano Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday, April 21 at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Riverhead Cemetery.
