Frederick J. Alexander, III, a dedicated Sergeant of the Riverhead Police Department, passed away on November 10, 2024, at the age of 78 in Riverhead, NY. Born on June 6, 1946, in Queens, NY, Frederick lived a life marked by service and devotion his community.
Frederick proudly served in the United States Coast Guard during the Vietnam War from 1964 to 1968, an experience that shaped his character and commitment to public service. Following his military service, he pursued a Bachelor’s Degree and went on to enjoy a distinguished career in law enforcement, embodying the principles of integrity and bravery as he protected and served the residents of Riverhead. The Alexander family are the former owners of the Reginald Tuthill Funeral Home, Fred's father, Frederick J. Alexander II worked for his father-in-law and later married Beverly Tuthill. Fred's brothers, Eric and Dean took over the family business and eventually opened another funeral home in Wading River, NY. The Alexander family has a much-respected history in the Riverhead community and Fred will be greatly missed.
His personal life was enriched by a close-knit family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Irene Alexander (nee Lankau), and his two daughters, Brigitte Alexander and Veronica Taraszewski (James). Frederick is also survived by his brothers, Dean Alexander (Linda) and Scott Alexander (Joan), and his cherished granddaughters, Kristy Keating (Robert Keating III) and Korrin Schofield. Adored by his great grandchildren; Hannah Spink, Nicholas Trombly, Logan Foster, Sophia Keating, Olivia Keating, Vivien Keating and Robert Keating IV. Beloved brother-in-law of Michael Lankau (Margaret), Albert Lankau, Patrick Lankau (Kathleen) and Mary Huggins (Jack)
Frederick was predeceased by his daughter, Susan Ross; his brother, Eric Alexander; his father, Frederick J. Alexander II; and his mother, Beverly L. Alexander (nee Tuthill).
Visitation services will be held at Tuthill-Mangano Funeral Home in Riverhead, NY on November 13, 2024, from 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM, and again from 7:00 PM to 9:30 PM. A prayer service will take place on November 14 at 10:00 AM, followed by burial at Calverton National Cemetery at 11:00 AM.
Frederick J. Alexander, III will be remembered not only for his contributions to law enforcement but also for the profound love he had for his family and the strength of character he exemplified throughout his life. His legacy of service and dedication will continue to inspire those who knew him.
