Gerard H. Hendel (Jerry), a self-employed business owner, passed away suddenly on February 26, 2025 at the age of 63. Beloved brother, uncle, nephew, cousin and friend, Gerard left an indelible mark on the hearts of everyone he encountered.
Born on October 27, 1961 in Mary Immaculate Hospital, Jamaica, New York, Gerard was the first born of Jerome and Margaret Hendel of Valley Stream. In 1967, the Hendel Family moved to their new home in Deer Park, New York. Gerard was the big brother of five younger Hendel children. He was the “Greg” of the Hendel Bunch.
Among many of Gerard's passions was flying, which he pursued with great enthusiasm, so much so, that his license plate and email address was “AV8OR.” Gerard, like his father, was a devoted lifelong Mets and Notre Dame fan. Through every season, every win, and every heartbreak, his loyalty never wavered. The cheers of “Let’s Go Mets! and “Go Irish!” will forever resonate in our hearts.
Those who were fortunate to spend time with Gerard will always remember his booming voice, outlandish stories, sense of humor, kindness, and generosity. Cherished by his family, Gerard is survived by his beloved sister, Barbara Hendel-Coyne; his devoted brother, Richard Hendel; his caring sisters, Patricia and Kathleen Hendel; his supportive brother, Robert Hendel; and his loving sister-in-law Michele Reitano Hendel, as well as numerous nieces and nephews—Brian, Briana, Ricky, Matthew, Stephan, Ava, Noah and Lauriana.
Gerard’s greatest joys in life were his family and friends. He prioritized them above all else by hosting pool parties and barbeques or attending birthday gatherings and family functions that he would never miss. He showed up with love, kindness and laughter—unfiltered humor, and his larger-than-life presence, filling every room with his loud voice. Gerard was filled with compassion, generosity, and an unwavering loyalty to those lucky enough to know him. Without a doubt, anyone who crossed his path walked away with a great story or two—whether fact or fiction.
As we mourn the loss of Gerard, we also celebrate the life he lived and the love he shared with all of us. He will forever be remembered and deeply missed. He truly lived his life like the song “My Way.”
Rest in peace, Gerard. Your uniqueness, love of life and heart of gold will live on in our hearts forever.
