James J. McGuire of East Setauket, N.Y. died Jan. 24, 2019 in his 95th year.
A longtime resident of Riverhead, N.Y., he was born in Brooklyn April 1, 1924, to Edward McGuire and Rosalie Armstrong.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and married Anna Ullrich in Brooklyn, N.Y., shortly after his return.
Mr. McGuire had a long and varied employment career, culminating in hearing aid sales in the early 1970s. He opened the first of several McGuire’s Hearing Aid Service offices in Riverhead in the mid 1970s. He continued working in the field for the next 25 years, serving twice as president of the New York State Hearing Aid Society.
Mr. McGuire had a lifelong interest in sports. He was a pitcher on the Army’s baseball team during World War II and continued pitching in local baseball games until age 40. He coached boys CYO basketball for over a decade and coached Little League baseball teams in both Riverhead (with the Riverhead Fire Department team) and in Flanders.
He is survived by his second wife, Margrit Hillman; his seven children Ann Hill (Charles, deceased), Mary Lever (Mike, deceased), James G., Geralyn, Michael (Debra), Edward (Jane) and Patrick (Diana); his three step-children Debra Cook (Jeff), Dale Carr (Roxanne, deceased) and David Carr (Danielle); and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A memorial will be held at Tuthill-Mangano Funeral Home Sunday, March 31, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. with interment at Calverton National Cemetery Monday, April 1.
Memorial donations may be made to Timothy Hill Children’s Ranch (timothyhill.org) in Riverhead or the Starkey Hearing Foundation (starkeyhearingfoundation.org) in Minneapolis, Minn.
