John J. Coughlin, Sr., a beloved figure in the heart of Deer Park, New York, passed away on January 9, 2025, at the age of 89. Born on March 20, 1935, in Brooklyn, New York to his parents Michael and Margaret Coughlin. John lived a life marked by service, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to his family and community.
As a proud Army veteran, John exemplified the values of courage and honor throughout his life. He went on to serve as a Sergeant for the New York City Police Department, where his kindness, caring nature, and devotion to his work earned him the respect and admiration of his colleagues and the community he protected. He was also on the Deer Park School Board for many years. John's commitment to justice and public safety was mirrored in his personal life, where he consistently placed the needs of others before his own, leaving a profound impact on all who knew him.
John's education was distinguished, holding a Master's degree that reflected his dedication to learning and personal growth. His intellectual pursuits only complemented his considerable character traits, creating a full and rich life.
Family was the cornerstone of John's existence. He is survived by his loving children, Coleen Reha-Pozankowski, Kerry and Michael, and John and his wife Margaret Coughlin. John was the proud grandfather of nine cherished grandchildren—John, Joseph, James, Samantha, Jessica, Jennifer, Allison, Jenna, and Gianna—each of whom brought unending joy to his life. He often found solace and pride in participating in their milestones and celebrating their achievements.
John's visitation will take place on January 20, 2025, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Mangano Family Funeral Home, located at 1701 Deer Park Avenue, Deer Park, NY 11729. Following the visitation, a Mass will be held in his honor on January 21, 2025, at Saints Cyril & Methodius R.C. Church, beginning at 10:15 AM, with attendees invited to pay their final respects and celebrate the remarkable life he led.
