John E. McDonald, a beloved figure in his community and cherished by his family, passed away on November 12, 2024 at Maria Regina Residence. in Brentwood, NY.  Born in the Bronx, NY, on June 10, 1938, he lived a life marked by dedication, love, and a vibrant sense of humor that touched everyone around him.

John devoted 26 years of his life to the New York City Police Department as a Detective Sergeant.  He was known for his unwavering commitment to helping others, always ready to lend a hand to friends and neighbors alike. His colleagues admired not just his professionalism, but also the kindness and warmth he brought to the job each day.

Education was close to John's heart; he held a master's degree and firmly believed in the power of learning. Beyond his career, his proudest accomplishment was building his own home, a testament to his skills in carpentry and his resilience as a hardworking individual. John was also a proud veteran who served in the US Army as part of the 101st Airborne Division, affectionately known as the Screaming Eagles.

Within the embrace of his family, John was a loving husband to his beloved wife, Catherine McDonald (Nee: Murray). He was a devoted father to four sons: John (Patricia), Andrew (Karyn), Daniel (Indy), and Thomas (Sabrina) McDonald, as well as his cherished daughter, Catherine (Douglas) Hassell. He reveled in the joy of being a grandfather to twelve grandchildren and a great-grandfather to one, sharing countless memories filled with laughter, love, and life lessons.

John's passions extended beyond his career and family; he found solace in reading and the thrill of traveling, always eager to explore new places and cultures. His legacy of love, humor, and hard work will echo through the lives of those he touched, reminding them of the incredible man he was.

Visitation will be held on November 17, 2024, from 4 PM to 8 PM at the Deer Park - Mangano Family Funeral Home, located at 1701 Deer Park Ave, Deer Park, NY. A Mass of Christian burial will take place on November 18, 2024, at 10:15 AM at Saints Cyril & Methodius R.C. Church in Deer Park, followed by burial at Calverton National Cemetery.

Though he will be deeply missed, John's spirit will live on in the hearts of his family and friends, forever inspiring them to embrace life with the same love and laughter he so generously shared.
