John Wittschack, Sr., a United States Army veteran, valiant firefighter, and beloved member of the Middle Island community passed away on December 24, 2023, at the age of 73. Born in Port Jefferson, NY to his loving parents Frederick and Felomena, John lived a life filled with service and devotion to his community.
John proudly served in the US Army from 1970 to 1972, where he showcased his unwavering dedication to his country. His military service exemplified his commitment to defending freedom and protecting those in need. John began his career in road construction, working tirelessly for the Town of Brookhaven. His commitment to maintaining safe and efficient roadways made a lasting impact on his local community.
In addition to his work in road construction, John also served as a firefighter for the Middle Island Fire Department. As a first responder, he fearlessly faced countless dangers in order to protect and save lives. John's courage and selflessness earned him the admiration and respect of both his fellow firefighters and the community he served.
However, John's first love was always his family and friends. He was a loving father to his sons Matthew Wittschack and Patrick Wittschack. John's pride and joy were his grandchildren Melody and Anthony (A.J.) Wittschack, who undoubtedly brought immense happiness into his life.
John will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. He is survived by his brother Frederick (Diane) Wittschack, and his sisters Philomena Vincent, and Helen Rector, as well as numerous other relatives, nieces, nephews and friends whose lives were also touched by him.
To honor John's memory, there will be visitation services held at Mangano Family Funeral Home Of Middle Island, located at 640 Middle Country Rd, Middle Island, NY 11953. The first visitation will take place on December 28, 2023, from 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM, and the second visitation will take place on the same day from 7:00 PM to 9:30 PM. There will be additional visitation services on December 29, 2023, from 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM and from 7:00 PM to 9:30 PM at the same location. A final burial ceremony will be held at Calverton National Cemetery with military honors on December 30, 2023.
John Wittschack, Sr. will forever be remembered for his unwavering commitment to public service and his profound love for his family and friends. His legacy of hard work, sacrifice, and bravery will serve as an inspiration to all who knew him. As we mourn his loss, let us also celebrate the extraordinary life he lived and the lasting impact he made on our community. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
