Jorge V. Wharton

Jorge V. Wharton, 97, died on September 20, 2019, at his home
in Springfield Gardens, New York.

Mr. Wharton was born on November 19, 1921 in Guantanamo,
Cuba to Thomas Wharton and Jane Mills-Wharton, originally
from St. Kitts, WI. He was the youngest of nine children.
Jorge could accomplish anything he set his mind to do. At an
early age he went to work at the US Naval Base in Guantanamo
Bay, Cuba where he rose to the level of Assistant Fire Captain.
In 1954 he married Gladys Tavera, a student teacher from
Jamaica, Oriente. They began their family in Guantanamo, Cuba
with the births of their two eldest children, Tomas and Reina.
In 1960, Jorge and Gladys decided to move their family to the
United States, where Jorge trained to become a Watch Engineer
to support his family. A few years after arriving in New York,
the couple added a set of twin girls to their young family -
Gladys and Jane. In 1974 they purchased their family home in
Springfield Gardens, Queens. He retired after a rewarding career
at the Hospital for Special Surgery to focus on his wife and
family.

When not focused on his work or family, Jorge explored his
other interests. In Cuba he was known as an entrepreneur in his
community as the owner of the local general store. In the United
States he took an interest in photography and was known as a
portrait and wedding photographer. He loved traveling,
gardening, cooking, and belonging to La Gran Logia Masonica
of Guantanamo and the Serenisma Gran Logia de la Lengua
Espanol of New York.

He is survived by his four children: Tomas, Reina Aida, Gladys
Elaine, and Jane Yvette; his grandchildren: Stephanie, Yvonne,
Michael, George, Asha, Alece, and Danilo; his sons-in-law:
Kevin, Jose, Errol; his brothers-in-laws: Armando and Pedro;
and numerous nieces and nephews including Nelsie and Maritza
who reside in New York. He also leaves a great many friends,
neighbors, and acquaintances.
