Lawrence Vincent Harrington (7/21/37-7/16/24)
Lawrence Harrington (Retired Police Officer Suffolk County PD #996) of Coram, passed away on 7/16/24 at the age of 86 after a year's long battle with terminal kidney disease.
Lawrence was born in the Bronx, NY, the second of four children to Charles and Alice (Creegan) Harrington. He spent his youth with his brothers and sister in the Bronx, graduating from Christopher Columbus High School in 1955. After graduating High School he was employed as a lineman for Consolidated Edison and served in the U.S. Navy Reserve. In 1964, he graduated from the Suffolk County Police Academy and was assigned as a Foot Patrolman to the 6th precinct in Coram, walking foot patrol in Port Jefferson. In time he was assigned to a patrol car and eventually became a Plain Clothes Police Officer, retiring after 35 years of service in 1999.
In 1958 while living in Ronkonkoma, NY, Larry met Carol Ann Johnson, the sister of his neighbor. Instantly smitten, they began dating and were married in August 1961. In time, their marriage was blessed with three sons, of whom Larry was inordinately proud. Larry lived a service centered life and was devoted to his family, community and church. He participated in all of his sons’ youth sports activities, serving as a baseball coach and manager, as well as a football coach, league commissioner and Cub Scout Packmaster for Pack 64. In the mid 1960’s, Larry became a member of the Coram Volunteer Fire Department. He was honored as the Fireman of the Year in 1970 and was an active member for over 50 years.
In the late 1970’s, Larry was active on the Church Council of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Middle Island NY, serving multiple terms as the Treasurer. After his retirement, he was particularly happy to visit and spend time with his two granddaughters. He and Carol joined Grateful Greyhounds and became very active in Greyhound rescue and placement throughout Long Island; they particularly enjoyed the Greyhound Reunions at Dewey Beach, Delaware. Larry was also involved in maintaining antique fire trucks as a member of the Coram Fire Department Antique Muster.
Larry was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Alice, his older brother Charles, and his brother-in-law Tony; he is survived by Carol, his loving wife of 62 years, sons Keith (Karen), Paul (Dan Bujold) and Scott, granddaughters Grace and Olivia, brother John (Joan), sister Caroline, sister-in-law Helga, and numerous nephews, nieces and friends.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff of VNS Hospice of East Northport for their compassionate, loving care of Larry through his final days
