William “Bill” E. Wegener, a lifelong resident of Riverhead, died Monday peacefully at his home of 51 years on Elton Street.
Born in Amityville NY in 1932 to William and Margarete (Nee Budd) Wegener of Brooklyn, NY, he graduated 1951 from Riverhead High School. He later was stationed in the US Army in Bad Aibling, Germany, where he met and married Margaret Pinkus who preceded him in 2014. He was a mechanic and an intelligence courier for the 328th Communication Reconnaissance Company.
He worked as a linotype operator for the Travelor-Mattituck Watchman and was a housekeeping supervisor for Peconic Bay Medical Center.
He was an active Trustee of the Riverhead United Methodist Church, Scoutmaster of Troop 202, participated in the 1948 month long Philmont Boy Scout Camp in New Mexico, and a member of the Riverhead VFW Post 2476. He volunteered at the Yellow Barn.
He is survived by his three sons William with daughter-in-law Lauri of Kings Park, NY, Robert of Lewes Delaware and Richard of Brooklyn, NY. He is survived by one granddaughter, Alma A Wegener. He leaves behind his loving companion Carol Tracy of Riverhead.
